In Sept. 2022, the European Commission presented a proposal for a regulation to prohibit products made using forced labor, including child labor, on the internal market of the European Union (EU). Work is now underway to prepare the relevant legislation. To raise awareness of the topic, “Care about what you wear, consume or buy” will take place on March 28, 2023, from 14:00-16:30 CET, featuring a fashion show from Louise Xin, an award-winning fashion designer, human rights activist and European Parliament Sakharov fellow in 2022. Born in China, raised in Sweden, and currently based in Paris, Xin is a fashion designer and founder of Scandinavia’s first rental-only couture brand.

“Care about what you wear, consume or buy” is a human rights action to raise awareness on the human rights impact of forced labor and the broader challenges at stake for an industry that includes sports, leisure and performance apparel. A panel discussion featuring MEPs, civil society, industry, and experts will follow. The debate will focus on human rights violations and the environmental consequences of forced labor practices while also contemplating existing policies to counter forced labor practices around the world, with a particular emphasis on the fashion industry.

The event will also be live-streamed.
