The Paris 2024 board of directors, which met on March 16, approved a climate strategy that commits it to organize “the world’s first Olympic and Paralympic Games with a positive contribution to the climate.” In line with the Paris Climate Agreement, Paris 2024’s primary objective is to prevent and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions linked to the event. In total, Paris 2024 will reduce such emissions by 50 percent when compared to previous editions of the Games, the organizers claim. Besides the reduction in GHG emissions, the other two pillars of the strategy are a support for projects with a positive contribution to climate and the mobilization of stakeholders to maximize long-term positive impact. Together with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Paris 2024 is also working with the United Nations as part of the “Sports for Climate Action” initiative to raise awareness of climate issues among the global sports community.
