According to a telephone poll by Kyodo News, around 80 percent of Japanese people would like this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo to be postponed or even cancelled. Japan is currently struggling with a resurgence of Covid-19 cases. The cities of Tokyo, Saitama, Kanagawa, and Chiba entered into a state of emergency on Jan. 8. In the news agency’s survey, 44.8 percent of respondents said that there should be another postponement of the Games – they were originally scheduled to take place in 2020 - while 35.3 percent called for their cancellation. The city of Tokyo recorded nearly 1,500 new coronavirus cases on Jan. 10, the sixth day in a row with the number of cases exceeding 1,000. The Olympics are scheduled to run this year from July 23 to Aug. 8, and the Paralympics are due to follow from Aug. 24 to Sept. 5. The organizers have previously stated that the Games will be cancelled outright if they cannot take place this year either.
