Christian Prudhomme, manager of the Tour de France, has confirmed in an interview with the Guardian that there will be a women’s bicycle race in 2022 and that it will be held closely after the three-week men’s Tour. Further details on the race will be presented in October, which is also the period in which the men’s Tour is typically presented. Prudhomme added that a women’s race was supposed to be held this year, but the plan was cancelled because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics to this year. It will not be a premiere, though, as a women’s Tour de France was previously held from 1984 to 1989. The Tour de France is organized by Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), which will also continue to organize La Course by Le Tour de France, a one-day women’s road bicycle race, according to Cyclingnews.
