UEFA and CONMEBOL (Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol), the governing body of South American football, have announced a series of new events involving women’s football, futsal and youth teams.

The youth team of Club Atlético Peñarol from Uruguay, i.e. the winners of the 2022 CONMEBOL U-20 Copa Libertadores, will face S.L. Benfica from Portugal, i.e. the winners of the 2022 UEFA Youth League, at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo on Aug. 21.

The winners of the 2022 UEFA Futsal EURO, Portugal, and the third-placed team, Spain, will play a final four tournament with Argentina, i.e., the winners of the 2022 CONMEBOL Copa América de Futsal, and runners-up Paraguay at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires on Sept. 16-18.

Finally, the future winners of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, to be played in July in England, and 2022 CONMEBOL Copa América Femenina, to be staged in July in Colombia, will contest a UEFA-CONMEBOL Women’s Finalissima in Europe. The date and location of this third event will be announced in due course.

The new events were announced on the heels of the Finalissima between UEFA EURO 2020 winners, Italy and CONMEBOL Copa América winners, Argentina on June 1, which was played to a sold-out Wembley Stadium in London. In addition to the organization of these new events, the two continental governing bodies will continue to work on the mutual recognition of coaching qualifications, which is supposed to come into effect in the course of 2023.
