The provisional results of a review by Sports Marketing Surveys (SMS) of 80 golf courses in the U.K. suggest that rounds played in England, Scotland and Wales during October were up by 65 percent year-on-year. The research firm, which covers some 200 golf courses in the region, will be releasing final figures in January. Its figures for the third quarter, as reported by Golf Business News, already show year-on-year increases in rounds played since 2019, despite the Covid-19 lockdowns. That said, new lockdowns have reclosed the regions’ courses and will undoubtedly affect the final figures. For Richard Payne, director at SMS, “the unprecedented demand witnessed since the end of the first lockdown bodes well for a strong December, as well as to a fast start to 2021.”
