According to CMDsport, JD Sports has now surpassed Foot Locker to become Spain's number-one retailer of sneakers in total doors. Since early 2018, JD has increased its points of sale in Spain by 45 percent, from 40 to 58 stores. Eight of these have opened this year: in Valladolid, Algeciras, Ponferrada, Valencia, Toledo, Cuenca, Seville and, most recently, Zaragoza. By the Spanish trade paper's count, Foot Locker had 60 stores in Spain at the start of this year but currently has 55. JD's latest store – the one in Zaragoza – just opened in October and is unusually big, its 645 square meters easily exceeding the company's average of 275. It employs a staff of 61. CMDsport reports also that JD will be opening two more stores in Spain this year: in Gran Canaria and Alcoi. JD has pursued its expansion in Portugal as well, opening two stores on the outskirts of Oporto and raising its country total to 20. It plans to open two more stores, on the outskirts of Lisbon, before the year is out. By the start of 2020, then, some 82 stores will be operating under the JD Sports banner on the Iberian peninsula – with another five to come.
