Acushnet Company is cutting the workforce at its Titleist golf ball plants in Massachusetts, it has been reported. The 169 eliminated positions make up about 11 percent of the 1,500-strong workforce in the area, and will take place gradually. Acushnet, a Fortune Brands company, blamed the drop in consumers’ discretionary spending, but said that it expects the industry to bounce back, and hopes to call back the laid off workers when the economy improves. In the first quarter it saw a 33 percent fall in operating income to $34.7 million, and a 13 percent drop in sales to $347.0 million.
