Acushnet, the golf division of Fortune Brands that consists of Titleist, Cobra Golf and FootJoy, reported operating income of $88.6 million for the 2nd quarter ended June 30, up 7.9 percent from the same period a year ago. Its sales jumped by 11.5 percent in this seasonally strong quarter to $474.6 million, largely because of good demand for new golf clubs and shoes. Sales of golf balls increased, thanks in part to higher prices. FootJoy recorded growth internationally. The lower margins were attributed to patent defense costs and to the timing of expenses.
