Adidas has defended itself against claims by Greenpeace International that it has failed to fulfill commitments to reduce releases of toxic chemicals from its facilities. In its newly-launched Detox Catwalk initiative, Greenpeace included sportswear companies like Adidas, Nike and Li Ning in a list of “greenwashers.” The Detox campaign wants fashion brands to commit to zero discharge of all hazardous chemicals by 2020 as well as requiring their suppliers to disclose toxic chemical releases that could have caused water pollution. Adidas said that it does not agree with Greenpeace's ranking, adding that the company has been working to reduce and “progressively” eliminate hazardous chemicals in its supply chain for a number of years. The sportswear brand pointed to its own Restricted Substances Policy, which prohibits the use of chemicals considered as harmful or toxic, as well as its Health & Safety Guidelines, Environmental Guidelines and the Guide to Best Environmental Practices, which set standards for suppliers on handling and disposing of chemicals.
