Adidas has unveiled a fully biodegradable running shoe made from Biosteel fiber, a nature-based and completely biodegradable replication of natural silk. The Futurecraft Biofabric, which has been developed in partnership with AMSilk, was presented on Nov. 17. at the Biofabricate Conference in New York, where Adidas and AMSilk also announced they will explore the use of Biosteel fiber in performance products on a larger scale. The Biosteel fiber, which is used for the upper of the new prototype shoe, is 15 percent lighter in weight than conventional synthetic fibers, while maintaining the strength that is needed for a performance product. According to Adidas and AMSilk, the Futurecraft Biofabric is the first product with a high-performance material made of nature-identical silk biopolymers. AMSilk, headquarterd in Planegg near Munich, Germany, is a global industrial supplier of synthetic silk biopolymers.
