After a 6-month investigation, Nike has decided to stop placing orders for hand-stitched football balls with Saga Sports, on the grounds that this Pakistani company failed to correct various labor compliance violations. Saga was outsourcing balls without permission to homes in Sialkot, the area where it is based. According to a statement released by Nike, the Fair Labor Association (FLA) had discovered during a recent audit numerous labor, environmental and health and safety compliance violations at Saga’s facilities. Nike says that there will be no delivery shortages until next Spring for its footballs and that the various teams and leagues that it sponsors will remain unaffected. The company will continue to have footballs both hand and machine-stitched at factories in China and Thailand while it looks for additional partners. Nike will continue to source apparel from Pakistan.
