Beach volleyball has been rebranded sand volleyball in the U.S. by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. It was a logical step for this discipline, which has seen an increase of 28 percent in U.S. participation since 2007, because it can be played on a sandpit off the beach. The AVCA will organize the first Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championship between Apr. 27 and 29, involving 15 colleges and universities.
