The World Athletics (WA) governing body has revealed that Beijing, China’s capital, will be the host city for the prestigious 2027 edition of the World Athletics Championships. The decision was announced following a council meeting in Scotland, preceding the World Athletics Indoor Championships set to take place in Glasgow from March 1-3.
This marks the second time China will host the Championships, following its successful hosting in 2015, also in Beijing. Beijing, known for its role as the host city of the 2008 Olympic Games, boasts robust athletics infrastructure, including the iconic 80,000-seater Olympic Stadium.
WA President Sebastian Coe emphasized the significance of China’s sports market, with over 1.4 billion people and impressive broadcast consumption figures. “This poses a massive opportunity to grow our sport and fan base in one of the biggest commercial markets in the world,” stated Coe.
