NPD Group estimates that the worldwide cycling market was worth €38.5 billion after VAT at retail level in 2012. The data, reported by Bike Europe, also show that cycling, including bike parts and accessories as well as the sale of bicycles for day-to-day transportation, represents the biggest single category in the worldwide sporting goods market, where it holds a 14 percent share. The NPD Group has valued the global sport market in 2012 at €272.6 billion.

The total value of bike sales at retail level stood at €25.0 billion in 2012, according to NPD. Around 132.3 million bicycles, including e-bikes, were sold last year all over the world. The average sales price per bike was calculated at €189.

 

Sales of bicycles plus parts and accessories, excluding apparel and footwear, were valued at €36.4 billion. Sales of cycling apparel and footwear stood at €2.1 billion.

Besides the breakdown in bikes and parts & accessories sales by country, NPD also provides a breakdown of the bike market at retail level in 13 major segments. These include sales by bike categories (electric bikes, city/mobility bikes excluding e-bikes, mountain bikes/all terrain bikes and kids bikes) as well as repair services, rental services, components, baby seats, locks, pumps, lights, and helmets. Statistics were gathered by NPD with the support of retail tracking data from significant sports retailers.
