Bluesign Technologies has announced what it defines as a “strategic partnership” with Nike Inc. to accelerate the supply of more sustainable chemistries and materials for the Nike group of brands. The agreement allows Nike's suppliers to access key Bluesign tools and data at a nominal cost. Without such an agreement, it would have taken the company a significant number of years and investment to go through individual factory assessments because of the huge size of its supply chain. More than 800 factories contracted by Nike in nearly 50 countries and hundreds of textile manufacturers supplying them will thus be able to use the Bluesign  Bluefinder and the Bluesign  Blueguide. The Bluefinder gives suppliers access to pre-screened and more sustainable textile preparations, while the Blueguide lists more than 30,000 materials made with chemicals listed in the Bluefinder and used at facilities that have undergone rigorous assessment. Pointing out that the Swoosh introduced a Restricted Substances List in 2001, Bluesign says that Nike is aware that around 60 percent of the environmental impact of a pair of shoes is in the materials employed.
