Fresh from claiming the first Olympic gold by a US woman in figure skating since Sarah Hughes in 2002, Alysa Liu joins Nike as the brand moves to capture the cultural moment generated by Milano Cortina 2026 — and a Gen-Z audience that followed her comeback closely.

Nike has signed Alysa Liu, the 20-year-old figure skater who won Olympic gold at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, adding the American champion to its global athlete roster.

Liu’s win at the Milano Ice Skating Arena made history. With a free skate that included seven triple jumps without a fall, she became the first US woman to take Olympic figure skating gold since Sarah Hughes in 2002. The victory quickly travelled beyond the rink, sparking heavy media attention and social chatter, helped by Liu’s following in music and fashion circles.

Nike’s first campaign with Liu leans into that wider profile, placing her in a sport-meets-streetwear setting and pairing her with upcoming 2026 releases including the Air Max 95 “Neon,” the Air Liquid Max and the Jacquemus x Nike Swoosh Moon.

Why Alysa Liu matters: comeback, authenticity and cultural pull

The commercial logic of the signing is reinforced by Liu’s personal narrative, which Nike has placed at the centre of its campaign. She became the youngest US national champion in figure skating at 13, but stepped away from elite competition as a teenager, citing the mental and emotional toll of the sport.

Her return — and subsequent Olympic victory — was framed from the outset on her own terms: she has been vocal about refusing to adapt her appearance, her program music choices or her personal identity to meet the expectations of the skating establishment. In her own words, mentioned in a long interview piece published by Nike magazine on March 23, she described her decision-making now as binary: “If it’s not a ‘hell yes,’ it’s a ‘hell no.’”

A two-piece capsule collection

Nike is releasing a limited commemorative capsule tied to Liu’s gold medal performance. The two-piece collection, comprising a graphic hoodie priced at $85 and a graphic T-shirt at $45, launches on April 30, 2026, via the SNKRS app and Nike’s official channels. Both pieces feature a monochromatic aesthetic, with photography of Liu in motion and a printed replica of her autograph. The hoodie is made from heavyweight French terry fabric, placing it at the higher end of Nike’s commemorative apparel range.
