French exports of footwear totaled €1.318 billion in the first quarter of 2025, down by 4 percent year-over-year, while imports were flat at €2.086 billion, but Asian producers increased their market share, according to data released by Alliance France Cuir, the trade association representing the country’s leather and leather goods industry.

Alliance France Cuir highlighted that 17 percent of imports stemmed from European countries and 81 percent from Asia. The previous year, 21 percent of footwear imports came from European producers and 77 percent from Asian manufacturers.

It added that the revenues of domestic shoemakers dropped by 6.4 percent over the period and total production in volume slumped by 11.3 percent.
