The German Sporting Goods Association (BSI) has voiced its support for the ambitious EU supply chain law, the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), advocating for more impact-oriented sustainability legislation.
“As an industry, we are open to appropriate, ambitious and impact-oriented sustainability legislation and advocate binding sustainability standards at EU level in the sense of a ‘level playing field.’” says Stefan Rosenkranz, Managing Director of BSI. “The CSDDD is an important contribution to securing the future and competitiveness of European companies.”
The BSI is in favor of maximum harmonization in all member states and a risk-based approach to due diligence management that covers the entire value chain. In addition, the association welcomes an approach under which companies should align their business model and corporate strategy to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
The Association also supports the sanction measures provided for in the EU Commission’s draft passed in June 2023, consisting of official controls and the possible imposing of penalties.
“Many of our members are already pioneers in the area of sustainability,” explains Rosenkranz. “We know from experience that companies are up to the challenges and are calling on politicians to enable low-bureaucracy and impact-oriented implementation.”
The next step in the legislative process is negotiations between the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission. The parties hope to reach a final agreement on the CSDDD by the end of this year.
