China seems to be gaining market share when it comes to counterfeiting. The European Commission reports that in 2008, 93.4 percent of all seizures of counterfeit shoes in Europe were of Chinese products, up from 79.6 percent in 2007. The report notes that a similar trend was seen in other countries including the U.S. In addition, the total number of seizures in Europe grew by 34 percent over 2007’s figure, to 4,358. Among those, though, the number of sportswear items actually declined by 23 percent.

CORRECTION: The second-quarter results for Deckers Outdoor Corporation, reported in the last issue, should have noted that sales of the company’s Simple brand fell by 25.5 percent to $3.5 million.
