Peloton Interactive has recalled approximately 800,000 exercise bikes in North America after 35 reports of seat-post failure under use – with minor injuries such as bruises and lacerations.

The voluntary recall affects about 750,000 bikes in the US and about 27,000 in Canada. The company is offering free replacement parts and has urged users to stop using affected bikes until they are repaired.

The recall involves the Peloton Bike (Model PL01), sold from 2018 to May 2023. The seat post can detach or break, causing riders to fall and injure themselves.

Peloton is working with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada on the recall. Customers can request a free replacement seat post that can be installed at home.

A company spokesperson said the recall “reflects Peloton’s continued commitment to rider safety and product quality,” adding that all newer models, including the Bike+, remain unaffected.

What to watch

This is Peloton’s second major product recall in recent years, after the 2021 treadmill recall over safety concerns. The move adds pressure to the connected fitness company, which is implementing a turnaround plan and seeking to rebuild brand trust amid competition from Echelon, NordicTrack and traditional gyms.
