The Indian government is considering incentivizing the textile industry to help promote sustainability practices, Fibre2Fashion has revealed. Roop Rashi Mahapatra, textile commissioner at the Government of India, delivered the message in a webinar titled “Sustainability in Action: Exploring Circularity and Sustainable Solutions in the Textile Industry,” organized by Fairtrade India and the Centre for Social Markets (CSM) in partnership with Fibre2Fashion on July 26. The European Union and the Switch Asia grants program supported the event. Mahapatra noted the negative environmental impact of the textile industry globally and the fact that the textile industry is the largest job creator after agriculture in India. Implementing sustainability requires capital and financial backing, she added, explaining that the Indian government is considering both offering financial support to the industry and implementing a rating system for companies.
