The Lenzing Group has announced an innovative concept that is meant to contribute to the sustainable protection of our glaciers while inspiring a circular economy in the nonwovens and textile value chain.

Geotextiles are used to protect ice and snow from melting due to global warming. However, the nonwovens used for this purpose are made of fossil-based fibers, which allow microplastics to enter the ecosystems. Nonwovens made from cellulosic Lenzing fibers, which are biodegradable at the end of their life cycle and can be completely recycled, can be a sustainable solution to this problem, suggested the company. Lenzing is now working with a network of committed partners on processing geotextiles into new textile fibers giving them a second life as a garment.

The innovative concept was presented on March 21 at the Palais des Nations, United Nations Office in Geneva, as part of the International Day of Forests celebrations.
