Decathlon is reportedly continuing its expansion drive in Germany, with at least six more openings this year. After new stores in Munich, Stuttgart and Berlin, Textilwirtschaft writes that the next openings are to take place in May in Lübeck and Landshut-Ergolding. The list continues with Kaiserslautern in June, Hamburg in the fall, Ingolstadt and Berlin again around the end of the year. Yet another opening is meant to occur next year in Wuppertal and the publication also mentions a larger project of 4,000 square meters in Oberhausen at a later stage. The French retailer currently has 30 locations and an online store in Germany, a relatively small number compared with the size of the market and the deployment of Decathlon stores in other countries. Smaller German retailers have been battling to protect their market but the current spurt of openings indicates that Decathlon has found ways to expand in the country – be it through larger openings as planned for the next months (the smallest being Kaiserslautern at 1,100 square meters) or a smaller inner city location in Munich.
