Decathlon USA is opening a 96,000 square-foot building in Massachusetts that is to include a 79,000 sq.-ft. flagship store and office space. An interesting aspect to the move is a sequel of events involving the owner of the real estate, W.R. Grace, which was sued in 1982 by eight local families alleging that the facility where Décathlon’s new store is springing up had polluted local wells, causing leukemia in seven children and one adult. The company settled the suit, and continues to be responsible for cleaning up the area, which is located about 12 miles northwest of Boston. The judicial dispute was the subject of a best-selling novel and a movie called “A Civil Action.”
