Dirk Bron, a former owner of Aktiesport, the aggressive Dutch sports retailer that is merging with Perry Sport, has taken over 15 large-scale Superconfex fashion stores in Belgium, which he reportedly intends to turn into discount outlets for branded clothing and sporting goods. Macintosh, the Dutch retail conglomerate that owns Pro Sport, has long struggled to get rid of its 40 loss-making Superconfex stores in Belgium and Holland. Some of them ended up in the hands of Vögele and of C&A, while 22 Belgian outlets were taken over last year by BR Bedding, a Dutch retailer specialized in clothing and bedroom furniture. The new owners closed down some of the outlets but the remaining ones continued to generate losses. Dutch and Belgian press reports indicate that Bron bought the 15 stores for a few million euros to turn them into a discount chain, offering leading brands at sharply reduced prices.
