Dutch sports retailers suffered a sales drop of more than 4 percent in 2005, according to Mitex, a national trade organization for fashion, shoe and sporting goods retailers. Consumer spending picked up at the end of the year, but this improvement was insufficient to make up for the sales drop registered in the summer. The decline was mostly due to falling prices, while volumes suffered less. Hardware sales even increased by 10 percent in volumes, but prices were under particularly heavy pressure in this category. Apparel suffered the smallest drop in prices, but then again it was the only category to endure a decline in volumes as well.
