Elisa, a large Finnish telecommunication operator with annual sales of some €1.5 billion, has taken over FRWD, a small bankrupt Finnish developer of outdoor computers that entered the consumer market two years ago. FRWD, which stands for Forward, says it had gotten excellent feedback for its new series of sports computers with wrist display, but ran out of cash because of high investments to build up brand awareness and sales channels. It sponsored the World Masters Orienteering Championships held in Finland last summer and it plans to sponsor the Helsinki city marathon next summer. Ikka Limma, who remains as chief executive, is counting on Elisa to help broaden FRWD’s international distribution through its own telecommunication partners around the world.
