Boxing was previously excluded from the program approved in 2022 due to concerns around the International Boxing Association (IBA), the then international federation for boxing.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that boxing will be included on the sports program of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games (LA28). This was approved on March 20, 2025 by the 144th IOC Session during the second day of its meeting in Costa Navarino, Greece.

Boxing was excluded by the initial sports program approved by the IOC Session in February 2022 due to concerns at the time around the International Boxing Association (IBA), the then international federation for boxing. Following the withdrawal of the IBA’s recognition in June 2023, the inclusion of boxing on the LA 28 program remained on hold.

After assessing the criteria regarding governance and sports integrity, the IOC Executive Board decided on Feb. 26, 2025 to provisionally recognize World Boxing as the international federation within the Olympic Movement governing the sport of boxing at world level. World Boxing is currently composed of 88 national federations from across five continents.

The sport of boxing was first included in the modern Olympic Games in 1904.
