The German market leader in socks is back in the Serbian town of Leskovac with its own factory. The facility, with a surface of 16,500 square meters, was recently inaugurated in the presence of Serbian President Boris Tadic. The company claims that the facility is one of the most modern knitwear plants in the world. It cost more than €10 million.
Currently, the group runs manufacturing facilities in Germany, Portugal, South Africa, Slovakia and Tunisia. The new Serbian location is set to make up to 15 million pairs of socks and stockings annually. Falke currently employs 3,100 people worldwide and wants to have 600 workers operating in Leskovac in the years to come.
Falke was already on the same spot with a factory until 1992, the very year when the lights went out over the Serbian economy in the course of the Yugoslav conflict and the subsequent economic embargoes imposed by the Western countries.
In the financial year 2011, Falke had total sales of €240 million. Reportedly, sales were up by 4.3 percent.
