Financial problems have reportedly caused three Indonesian manufacturing companies that supply footwear to Adidas to lay off about 18,000 employees. Two of the factories, Pt Dong Joe Indonesia and its sister company PT Spotec, closed down last month because of financial difficulties and the abrupt departure of the companies’ owner overseas. The two operations employed about 10,000 people. Another supplier, PT Tong Yang Indonesia, which has about 8,000 employees, will shut down for several months while it restructures and secures new financing. Adidas, which has been sourcing footwear from Indonesia for 20 years, said it wants to continue to source footwear there.
