Garmin has inked a letter of intent to acquire its long-time German distributor, GPS GmbH. The deal is subject to negotiations with Axel and Klaus Därr, shareholders of GPS. The German firm also acts as German distributor for various manufacturers of marine communication systems and satellite cell phones. GPS was founded by the Därr brothers in 1991. Regarded as a pioneer in the German outdoor market, the Därr family previously owned also an outdoor retailer with a mail order business, Därr Expeditionsservice, based in Munich, which was eventually taken over by another local outdoor specialist, Lauche & Maas.
