Giant Manufacturing, Taiwan’s largest bike maker, has decided to open its third plant in mainland China in Tianjin’s Jinghai County, following on its plants in Kunshan and Chengdu. Construction work on the $12 million factory will commence as soon as approval is granted and operations are expected to start at the beginning of next year. Giant points out that China has 1.3 billion people and an annual demand for over 25 million bikes. Last year, Giant produced a total of 3.02 million bikes in China, comprising 2.8 million conventional bikes and 220,000 electric models. In 2007, it expects to produce 3 million conventional bicycles and 320,000 electric models.
