Greenpeace has labeled Nike and Li Ning as “greenwashers” for not fully keeping their promises regarding the ecological sustainability of their supply chains. Greenpeace's Detox campaign, launched in 2011, calls on companies to commit to an individual “Detox solution” to eliminate the use and release of all hazardous chemicals from their global supply chain by Jan. 1, 2020. Detox-committed companies, among which are Nike and Li Ning, have been monitored to see who is actually delivering on their commitments, and who is giving mere paper commitments and greenwashed promises. Greenpeace has now released a table that ranks the performance of 18 major fashion companies in that respect, where Nike and Li Ning appear as “greenwashers” for “failing to walk the talk and take individual corporate responsibility for their hazardous chemical pollution.” Other categories in the ranking include Detox Leaders and Detox Losers, with “Greenwashers” in between.
