Hanesbrands, which took over Champion Europe recently, has reported a low single-digit increase for the Champion brand globally for its third quarter ended Oct. 1, with low double-digit growth in the mass market and strong double-digit growth in Japan. Retail bankruptcies in the U.S. caused a loss of $15 million in sales for the activewear segment of the group, which suffered drops of 2.1 percent in revenues to $510.6 million and of 22.3 percent to $74.6 million in operating earnings during the quarter. The acquisition of Champion Europe, Champion Japan and Pacific Brands in Australia contributed extra sales of $180 million in the quarter, helping the group's total turnover to grow by 10.7 percent to $1,761 million, with international sales up by 59 percent from a year ago. Net earnings rose by 7.2 percent to $173.8 million.
