Intersport Austria reports a 10 percent sales increase for the six months ended March 31, thanks in part to the fact that the Easter holidays fell in March instead of April last year. The affiliated retailers sales rose by 8.0 percent in Austria, by 1.0 percent in the Czech Republic, by 25.8 percent in Hungary and by 58.3 percent in Slovakia. Among the leading winter sports categories, the group experienced increases of 13 percent for alpine skis and 11 percent for touring skis, but sales were off by 2 percent for cross-country skis, by 10 percent for ice skates and 2 percent for snowboards. Apparel items performed better, with increases of 16 percent in children’s skiwear and 41 percent in children’s snowboard clothing. According to RegioPlan, the Austrian sporting goods market grew by 3.5 percent in 2009 and the growth rate could increase to 3.8 percent this year.
