Intersport France is taking over a French factory to assemble there about 200,000 bicycles annually under its private Nakamura label for distribution on the French market. Operational levels should soon be extended to 300,000 units, and some production may be sold at Intersport stores in other countries at a later stage. The factory was owned by a subsidiary of Cycleurope that was placed in liquidation a few weeks ago. Three former officials of the company had made a rival bid for the assets. Intersport plans to keep 175 of the 254 employees at the site, located at Machecoul. The factory was making Gitane bikes in the past, but it had been recently converted to the production of bikes for the mass market. It assembled 240,000 units in 2012.
