Intersport Germany has donated €11,000 to Deutsche Sporthilfe (“German sports aid”), a nonprofit foundation that supports athletes and hopeful talents who may make it onto the stage at the Olympics or other top sports events. Since 1967, Deutsche Sporthilfe has supported 44,000 athletes financially, though only West Germans benefited from its aid until the reunification of the country in 1990. Ninety percent of all German medals were won through the support of the NGO at the Olympic Games and other international and European competitions. According to a report compiled by Sporthochschule Köln, the prestigious sports university in Cologne, the average income per month for top athletes is around €600, given a workweek of 60 hours.
