Swemax is the name of a new device that is said to be capable of measuring and analyzing sweat, allowing for predictive analysis and progress tracking. The new biosensor has been developed by Biometrica, an Italian start-up based in Parma. In practical terms, the Swemax consists of an interchangeable patch and a very small device, the size of a lighter, which the athlete can place in a pocket. The data collected by the patch are transferred first to the device and then to the cloud, where artificial intelligence (AI) processes them. Machine learning gets to know the body of the athlete who uses the device better and better day after day. Thanks to this data collection and learning process, AI is able to warn the user in advance about possible cramps or other discomfort caused by a drop in mineral salts or liquids. All data is sent to the athlete’s phone through a special app. The Swemax can be of particular interest to endurance athletes. The Swemax is not yet available on the market. Biometrica is launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to sell the first 1,000 devices prior to starting large-scale production. An Italian climber, Nico Valsesia, is currently testing the device during his expedition to Mount Ararat – “From Zero to Ararat” – which debuted on May 14.
