JJB Sports has denied recent press reports in a Scottish Sunday newspaper suggesting that it was in negotiations with the Glasgow Rangers to buy ten Rangers Club Shops. The stores are considered to be too small for JJB which is pursuing a policy of opening bigger, mainly out of town, superstores. As part of a previously reported 10-year licensing agreement signed earlier this month, JJB has bought the license to sell all the official Rangers merchandise through its 439 UK stores. The licensing deal makes it also apparently the exclusive supplier of all the 17 Rangers stores around the world. The original press report suggested that Mike Ashley’s Sports World was also in the frame to buy the sites, but it seems unlikely. A spokesperon for the Rangers football club did say that there is currently a lease option available on the Rangers Superstore situated at the club’s Ibrox ground but no information was currently available regarding possible negotiations for the other stores.
