Joan Laporta, president of the Barcelona team, has reportedly disclosed that it stands to get a performance bonus of $10 million from Nike this year, on top of an annual contractual fee of $30 million, because of its victories in the two national football championships and in the Champions’ League. Meanwhile, Barça’s big competitor, Real Madrid, is moving deeper into debt to finance its €94 million acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo, the famous Portuguese player sponsored by Nike, from the Manchester United team. Real Madrid is also paying a reported €65 million for the transfer of a Brazilian star sponsored by Adidas, Ricardo Kaka, moving from the AC Milan team. Real Madrid, a team that endorses Adidas, paid €73 million to get the now retired Zinedine Zidane from Juventus.
