John Shanley, one of the industry’s top analysts covering the footwear, apparel and and golf sectors, died on Feb. 15 at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was 65. Very international-minded, he visited Europe frequently and asked top managers about details on their results in individual countries during conference calls. Shanley came to Wall Street relatively late in life after a successful career in the textile and retail industries as a strategic planner for firms like Milliken, Allied Stores and Woolworth. He made an immediate impact on Wall Street with his initial research for Genesis Capital Markets on Woolworth, which correctly predicted many of the problems facing the retailer at the time. He later worked for Wells Fargo before joining Susquehanna in 2004. Shanley was past president of the Retail Marketing Society and won “Best on the Street” honors from both The Wall Street Journal and Forbes. He was a graduate of Adelphi University and held an MBA from New York University.
