The U.K.’s High Court has ordered Frasers Group, the parent of Sports Direct and many other companies, to pay rent arrears to the landlords of one of its stores, which has been forced to stay closed for several weeks because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The judge supported the claims of the landlords of a Sports Direct store in Blackpool, near Manchester, as well as those of a cinema and a bingo hall operated by others. While expressing sympathy for the affected operations, the judge in the case ruled the voluntary code of conduct for commercial property rentals during the pandemic to be both “outside the litigation process and not applicable to these tenants who are not said to be unable to pay.”The same court had previously ruled in favor of the Westfield London shopping center in its claim to recover rental fees that had not been paid by The Fragrance Shop.
