M-Way, the specialty retail operation of the Swiss Migros Group for electric urban mobility, invites its customers to show up in the stores with their old bikes and to leave them there. All consumers enjoy a discount of 250 Swiss francs (€205-$270) on the purchase of a new e-bike if they donate their used bikes. The campaign is handled by the organization Velos für Afrika (“Bikes for Africa”) which repairs the used bicycles and ships them to Africa. The idea behind the initiative is that African workers should not spend hours walking from their hometowns to their workplaces or spend money on taxis because of a lack of public transport. Last year, Velos für Afrika sent 13,000 bikes to partner organizations in that continent. The bicycles are sold to them on a nonprofit basis just to cover the expenses for repair and shipment.
