New Balance has filed a lawsuit against luxury Italian label Golden Goose, claiming that the brand copied New Balance’s signature Dad sneakers, notably its Model 990 line. The lawsuit was filed on Aug. 18 in the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts. According to the complaint, Golden Goose’s Dad-Star shoe tries to foster a deceptive association with New Balance in the minds of consumers. The New Balance 990 sneaker was introduced in the 1980s and is now in its sixth iteration. In addition to design claims, New Balance is challenging the name used by Golden Goose for its sneakers, which also resembles a category strongly linked to New Balance. The American sports brand requires that Golden Goose stops advertising and selling the Dad-Star sneaker or release products in the future that infringe on its 990 trade dress. New Balance is also asking the court to award it with the profits that Golden Goose has made from selling the Dad-Star sneaker.
