Nike has been fined €12,555,000 by the European Commission after contractually preventing its licensees from selling football merchandise to customers in other EU countries, a policy that was in force from 2004 through 2017 and illegal under EU antitrust rules. This included licensed apparel and other logo gear for football clubs FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan, and AS Roma as well as national federations like the French Football Federation. According to a statement issued by the Commission, the fine was reduced by 40 percent because Nike cooperated with the investigation and facilitated the expansion of its scope.
