Nike has unveiled a new underfoot platform as part of the anniversary celebrations for the Air Max 1, the shoe that has introduced visible Nike Air cushioning. The new Nike Air VaporMax unit acts as a stand-alone outsole. Previous Air units had to be insulated by a secondary rubber layer, for protection and improved durability, whereas designers have now managed to incorporate the Air and exterior layer into one unified VaporMax Air unit. Moreover, by removing the layers between the foot and the Air platform itself, Nike Air VaporMax is said to make the shoe lighter-weight. Air has been part of Nike since it was first introduced in 1979. The release of the Nike Air VaporMax technology coincides with the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the Air Max 1 shoe.
