Nike's Breaking2 event at the Monza Formula One racetrack, on May 6, saw Eliud Kipchoge finish the challenge in 2 hours and 25 seconds. The Olympic marathon champion missed out by 25 seconds the attempt to become the first human to run the 26.2 miles distance of a marathon in under two hours as part of Nike's Breaking2 project. Kipchoge, however, beat the previous world record of 2:02:57, set by Dennis Kimetto in Berlin in 2014. Both athletes are from Kenya. Kipchoge's performance in Monza was also 2:40 better than his own personal record of 2:03:05, which he set at the London Marathon last year. Adidas, which runs its own “Sub2” project, praised Kipchoge for his courageous run in Monza in a tweet. Kipchoge was one in three athletes picked by Nike for the challenge, alongside Lelisa Desisa and Zersenay Tadese. The three elite athletes were supported by a group of around 18 pacemakers. Nike's Breaking2 program will conclude later this summer with a feature-length documentary produced in partnership with National Geographic.
