Oteros Sport, a Spanish chain of outlets based in Andalucia, signed an unexpected deal with Karhu International at the end of last month in Finland to take over the ownership of the brand throughout the Iberian Peninsula. The Spanish company already bought the distribution rights to Karhu last year for a 25-year period in the Spanish, Portuguese and Andorra markets and formed the entity Karhu Sport Ibérica in doing so. Antonio González Oteros, who clinched the deal, is currently vice president of Karhu Sport Ibérica. The company recently moved to buy up the brand as it felt that the €300,000 annual cost in royalty payments was too heavy. The 2008-09 Fall/Winter season will see the first Karhu collection to be widely distributed in Spain, except in the Extremadura region and in Portugal – two zones which will not be supplied before 2009. Oteros Sport has hinted that it is currently looking for major distributors on the peninsula. It is also working on bringing out swimwear and footwear lines for the brand in the near future. Oteros Sport opened its 32nd retail outlet this month in Malaga, measuring 1,600 square meters. It is situated on the same site as the group’s new head office, which is not yet operational.
