Oxylane Group, parent company of Décathlon, has bought a retail site at Ontario, California, raising suspicions that the giant French sporting goods chain wants to re-enter the U.S. market, this time without making an acquisition. It is expected to accommodate a superstore as well as a logistic hub. Called The Town Center Ontario and located on Milliken Avenue in the California town, the retail site measures 128,330 square feet from Faris Lee Investments for $11.75 million. It was formerly a cluster of furniture stores. Reportedly, Oxylane has also bought a site in the Chino-Chino Hills area near the 71 Freeway. Décathlon made a foray into the U.S. market in 1999 by purchasing the MVP Sports chain in Massachusetts, but the project didn’t work out and the French company stopped it gradually through 2006. It has never bought another chain.
